Chapter Meeting

  •  November 21, 2017
     11:30 am - 1:00 pm

November’s talk by Jon Turnipseed will cover a topic now frequently being discussed in the national news–nuclear weapons and ICBMs. It will cover the basics of how nuclear weapons are designed to make them “safe” and about the control process, which authorizes the use of nuclear weapons. Although there have been several “accidents” involving nuclear weapons over the past 70 years, due to prevention through design practices there has never been an accidental nuclear detonation. The detailed, but quickly responsive, Command and Control System used by United States ensures that unauthorized use of nuclear weapons is prevented. Jon worked many years in the underground ICBM silos, both as an enlisted technician and as an actual launch officer. He also worked several years in Nuclear Surety (safety and security) before retiring from US Air Force as a Major.
